My Yogic Chai package reads that it contains "100% Organic Ingredients" and that this a "Fair Traded Assam Tea". Those statements are powerful to me and automatically give my new Coconut Masala Chai acquisition a few brownie points. I have been dying to find a chai that is actually able to use coconut as an ingredient that stands out amongst the chai spices, but have been unable to do so. With assam as the base for the blend, I am not sure that this is the cup where that will happen, but I would love to be proved wrong!!All of the ingredients are organic and include fair traded assam, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, and shredded coconut. The package smells wonderful like a nice spicy chai but with a little sweetness--the small coconut shreds? I prepared as directed with a tsp of rock cane sugar and a healthy splash of milk. Prior to adding the milk, I took a couple of sips and the assam does add a little astringency to the cup--just a fyi for those looking for that in a chai. With the milk, my cup is a nice creamy chai with a medium amount of spice. While the coconut is not discernible as a flavor, I think it does add an extra sweetness to the cup making it less necessary to use alot of sugar. If I were to adjust the chai spices to suit my personal palate, this would have a touch more cinnamon and a little less ginger. However, I bought a couple of ounces of this and there is no reason why I won't be enjoying every last bit of it.
While I don't feel that coconut makes an appearance as a detectable flavor, this chai is well done and very tasty. I would recommend this blend to someone that wants a chai with a medium spice and a good punch of ginger. Don't purchase this on the notion that it will be a spicy coconut tea. It is a chai spice tea with shreds of coconut for a little natural sweetness. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to sipping this while watching football this season, which would be a much more enjoyable experience if I didn't live in Detroit and feel obligated to watch the Detroit Lions lose week after week after week. I need some caffeine to stay awake for all that! I digress! This is a tasty spice blend and I am happy to welcome it into my tea cabinet. Also, as I write this, Yogic Chai has a 50% off sale should you decide that you would like to try this for yourself. I look forward to sampling some of their other blends like a white tea chai and a lemongrass chai.
