I have only sampled a few different Hojicha teas, but this type of tea has never disappointed me. Although technically a green tea, the charcoal-roasted quality of hojicha lends it a toasty flavor that, to me, is comparable to a smooth and nutty Formosa oolong (one of my favorite teas). Boulder Tea's Hojicha Dark Roast was an excellent example of a good hojicha. The tea was very aromatic, dominated by an earthiness and nuttiness, but of course having an underlying smokiness. The flavor of this tea is a wonderfully balanced blend of different elements. There is a subdued mesquite-like smoky flavor which I found quite enjoyable; this roasted smokiness is not at all as strong (and unbearable) as the smoky essence of a lapsang souchong. This tea also has a dominant nutty-woodsy flavor, that had some hard-to-pinpoint familiarity. I later realized that the nutty-woodsy flavor was very similar to the wheat/grain flavors found in some of the old-fashioned whole-grain hot cereals. Unlike unroasted green teas that can often have a bitter grassy flavor, this tea had an earthy sweetness instead. In all, I found the flavor of this tea to be just what I was craving. This is a hearty cup of tea that I could enjoy at any time of day. For those interested in hojicha, Boulder tea offers several varieties, which vary in the extent of roasting the leaves have undergone, and thus vary in the roasted-smoky flavor of the tea. The sample I tried was the Fuka-iri, or Deep Roast. While I found the deep roast flavor to be completely satisfying, I would suggest that those just starting to try a roasted tea might opt for one of their lighter varieties (Asa-iri or Futsu). This tea seems reasonably priced too, which is always a plus in my book. This was my first Boulder tea sample, and if it is any indication of the rest of their products, it looks like I may be ordering from them soon. Boulder Tea's Hojicha Fuka-iri was a fantastic brew that made me wonder why I don't drink hojicha more often.
