"At Steenbergs, we've created this mix organic green masala chai to bring together everyone's interest in green teas these days with the classic flavours of a masala chai. Versions of this organic green chai tea can be found throughout the Middle East where they will often put in a pistachio nut to float in the cup. Steenbergs recipe is a luxurious recipe that includes crushed organic saffron. ." ---Steenbergs Organic website.Steenbergs Organic is a company that sells organic, Fair trade products--primarily cooking items, spices, teas, and coffee. They are based in the UK, but exactly the type of organization that I would love to buy from. Btw, under the shipping tab, it does state that shipping into the U.S. and Canada is currently not available.
My sample contains a lot of green tea, some brown powder sitting on the bottom (saffron I suppose), and some chai spices. It smells like a nice and spicy chai (I like my chai spicy), and appears to be of a decent quality. Their website suggests steeping this for 4-5 minutes in bowling water. I am a little uncomfortable with that suggestions due to this being green tea base. I steeped mine in steaming water and for 4 minutes.
While it was a little hot when I took my first sip, this is kinda strange. Kinda made me say "Hmm?" instead of "Mmmm!". After a couple sips of the odd tasting liquid, I gave this a pretty heavy dose of sugar and decent splash of milk to see if it would cover the odd taste. However, there is something in this (and I would have to believe that is the saffron) that makes tastes kinda fishy in my mouth. It was so odd to me that I ended up dumping my first cup and presumed that I had oversteeped. I made this again steeping for only 3 minutes thinking I might get a good cup. However, the subsequent cup was just as odd--and tastes kinda fishy in some weird way.
I ended dumping my second cup as well--its not that it was THAT bad--I could have finished it. However, I was starting to get worried that because there are some chai spices in here that this might ruin chai for me period. I'm sure there are people out there that will drink this and not taste anything funny or will love it, but I am not one of them. Guess I don't have to be too bummed that they don't ship to the U.S.
