Vanilla Chai Spice by TeaGuys attempts to add a little vanilla twist to the classic chai spice blend. The only problem is that the chai spices, particularly the cardamom, are so strong and overwhelming, that it was difficult to taste even a modest vanilla flavor. I sampled the tea without milk and sugar first, only to discover that this tea is way too bold, almost to the point of being harsh, on its own...maybe there is a reason that chai teas are traditionally taken with milk and sugar! Once adding a splash of milk and packet of sugar, however, the tea was much more enjoyable. Milk and sugar were necessary to subdue the otherwise over-powering cardamom flavor. By looks alone, cardamom is not disproportionately present, but what little is there must be of really high quality, because that is pretty much all I could taste. Besides the vanilla, the other chai spices (cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and peppercorns) were also much muted by the cardamom. This tea wasn't horrible by any means, but if you are looking for a more-balanced chai, I suggest you look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you can't get enough cardamom flavor in your chai, then this is the blend for you.
