Darjeeling Phuguri by TeaGschwendner is a great example of a high quality tea with a complex flavor profile. From its scent alone, this tea doesn't stand out from most other darjeelings that I have had. But once brewed, the depth of this tea became immediately apparent. This tea somehow manages to offer just about every flavor element possible: earthy, vegetal, floral, fruity, sweet, and the list goes on. More importantly, however, this strange blend of seemingly disparate flavor elements all come together to produce a crisp and refreshing cup of tea. The floral notes lingered throughout, with an almost perfume-like air coming off the tea. This tea had a little bit of a bitter bite to it, but this was just another characteristic to add to this tea's extensive flavor resume. From my experience, this tea seemed a bit light in color compared to other second flush darjeelings, but make no mistakes about it, the light color did not translate into a lackluster cup of tea. Until sampling TeaGschwendner's Darjeeling Phuguri, I never really understood why darjeelings are called the champagne of teas. I have not historically been a huge fan of darjeelings, but even for me, this one is a keeper.
