I don't normally like black tea, but I make exceptions for flavored blends that sound delicious, and this was one of them (I'm a sucker for spice blends). Usually, however, I'm a bit disappointed with the blend itself, and it usually has to do with the black tea. You'd think I'd just learn, but this time, my inability to learn a simple lesson paid off.Upon opening my nice vacuum-sealed sample pack, I was impressed with how the tea looked. It looks like typical black tea, but generously sprinkled throughout are large pieces of cinnamon, citrus peel, and chunks of carrot (yes, carrot; it's on the ingredient list!). The smell is impressive, too. You can clearly smell the black tea, but it blends wonderfully, especially with the cinnamon and orange scents, which are predominant in the smell.
Despite how delightful it smelled, I was still dubious about the taste; the black tea was dominant in the smell, and even though it blended well with the other smells, would the flavor do the same? I didn't have to worry, as it turns out. The black tea is just as dominant in the flavor, but the other flavors are perfectly balanced and blend perfectly with the black tea base. It does taste a little bit like chai, and it does include quite a few of the primary ingredients of chai (ginger, cloves, cinnamon), but the citrus peels add a wonderful twist to it.
Bottom Line: A wonderful spice blend if there ever was one. Even as a non-fan of black tea, I think this blend is nearly perfect. Try it with just a dash of milk and it adds a wonderful creaminess without detracting from any of the flavor. This is definitely a must-try blend!
