Thumbs up!"The taste of this is amazing! It is very smooth and creamy. It kinda coats your mouth with the creaminess, but also has a floral component, which the website identifies as orchids."

quangzhoumilkoolong.jpg"The stories of this tea naturally center on its wonderful milky flavor, which interestingly, is the result of a sudden shift in temperature during harvest - a rare occurrence to say the least.
One of the many legends explains that the first time this shift occurred was centuries ago when the moon fell in love with a comet passing through the night sky. The comet, as all comets are meant to do, passed by, burned out and vanished. The moon, in her sorrow caused a great wind to blow through the hills and valleys bringing about a quick drop in temperature. The next morning, local tea pluckers went out to collect their fresh leaf. To their surprise, when the tea was processed it had developed an amazing milky character, which was attributed to the motherly character of the old moon." ---Merkaba website.

Ron Campbell, the owner of Merkaba is a Twitter buddy of mine, and I have long been silently jealous as week in and week out I hear him tweet about how he is enjoying a cup of this oolong. I have the privilege of tasting one other milk oolong (thanks Kari) and I loved it. Anyway, when I saw that Merkaba had sent along some samples of this milk oolong, I jumped at the chance to sample it and I am glad I did!

My love affair with this oolong began when I first opened my sample package for a whiff. This truly does smell as though the leaves have been soaked in a rich milk or cream. There is an almost dessert-like sweetness to the aroma that is quite remarkable. While this oolong is semi-fermented, I will tell you that it is more characteristic of a green oolong than a darker one. The leaves are little twisted up, dark green nuggets that grow with each infusion. The taste of this is amazing! It is very smooth and creamy. It kinda coats your mouth with the creaminess, but also has a floral component, which the website identifies as orchids. There is also a natural sweetness to this which made it great with the shortbread that I snacked on while I wrote this review.

I love, love, love this oolong. Usually my favorite infusion with any oolong is the second infusion, but I have to say that I enjoyed the creaminess of the first infusion just as well as I liked the second infusion. This held up well for three infusions for me and I think it would have given up a reasonably flavorful fourth though I didn't attempt it. I am definitely a fan and will be purchasing some once I drink down my current stash a bit. It is reasonably priced at $8.10/oz--a steal for a tasty oolong. I also really loved Merkaba's Rolling Thunder if you are looking for another suggestion to add to your cart.
