mightyleafsilverjasmine.jpgMy first encounter with Mighty Leaf Silver Jasmine came as I sliced the shipping package open and also accidentally cut into the bag of tea. I was instantly enveloped (I'd say assaulted, but that has such a negative connotation) by a cloud of jasmine. I just wanted to keep my nose in the bag. Instead, I ran around the house demanding that everyone else have a smell. Jasmine fans all, they were impressed. (Or they just wanted me to go away.) I managed to close the packet and put it aside for a few hours, knowing that I'd be out there after dinner to experience this tea.

And that's just what I did. The tea was beautiful, top buds only, rustically hand processed and shaded from dark gray to silver, with abundant silver hairs. I followed all the suggested instructions, a rounded tablespoon of leaves to 12 ounces of 180° water, brewed for 3-1/2 minutes, on the low end of the recommended 3-5 minutes The one thing I didn't do was use filtered water because I didn't have any available.

The brewed cup was a light golden color, with a delicate jasmine fragrance that was almost peachy. One surprise in the taste was a definite tannic component that I don't usually associate with white teas. Not unpleasant, just not as delicate as the rest of the tea. I'm not sure what a 5 minute steep would do to the balance between jasmine and white tea sweetness and the tannic base note.

It's been half an hour since I finished the cup, and I still have the tastes of jasmine and tannins, and a full feeling in my mouth, a satisfied feeling. There's a lingering sweetness that I'm quite pleased with, because I'm usually a sugar person and I added nothing to this tea. Dare I say it? My mouth is quietly happy.
