I've given up on labeling my likes and dislikes by generalities. No longer can I claim I'm a "this" kinda guy or a "that". Some things I wouldn't normally consider to my liking may later appeal. Others that I swore by fall by the wayside. In short, I give up.Take black teas, for example. To most people, I declare that I can't stand 'em. I use the old worn-out adage: not my "cup o' (fill in blend here)" Then I ran across Ceylon black teas for the first time, and they knocked that declaration aside...and how.
Plucker's Pick has consistently impressed me with their Ceylon estate teas. Of the three they offer, I've had two. Seemed only fair I complete the troika. This time around, it was their standard Orange Pekoe, the Kenilworth estate black.
The leaves had the consistency of twigs; dark brown, brittle, kinda stringy, all par for course. However, the scent was aromatic, like a pungent French perfume. I brewed 2 teaspoons for five minutes in 16 ounces of boiling water.
The liquor was as the website states, orange-gold. On first whiff, the smell was deep but not unique - very "black tea"-ish, if that counts. Compared to the other estate teas Plucker's Pick offers, this was the lighter of the three. It also appeared to lack as much character. Still, as far as black teas go, it is quite good. If you're new to Plucker's, start with this one and work your way up to the others.
