When thinking of Indian tea, Assam and Darjeeling immediately come to mind. However, lesser known Nilgiri tea presents a nice option, with its clean distinctive taste; offering a brew strong enough for a breakfast tea, yet light enough to become an anytime pick-me-up. Nilgiri Glendale Estate Handmade from Tea Source is the finest Nilgiri tea I have tasted. In dry form, the tea is presented as whole leaves and bud sets, with stems attached. Leaf colors range from muted greens to golden brown and although the scent of the dry leaves is subdued, the steeped leaves burst with a distinctive citrus aroma.

Tea Source recommends using 1 rounded teaspoon per cup of boiling water, with a steep time ranging from 4-6 minutes. Although under the suggested time, I prefer my tea steeped for 3 1/2 to 4 minutes, as I find the shorter steep time produces a full flavored cup without being too overpowering.

The brewed cup produces a rich amber liquor, with a delicate and sweet, fruity flavor. The taste of the tea lingers in the mouth, but the finish is crisp, clean, and very refreshing. As an iced tea, the citrus flavor is even more pronounced. In my opinion, Nilgiri Glendale Estate Handmade is a perfect black tea, great for anytime of the day. This tea would especially suite those who are either new to black tea or those who are looking for a lighter black tea, perhaps as a breakfast option.
