Mighty Leaf's California Fields is a Black and Green tea blend, and you can see that in the dry leaf, which is a blending of short, broken black and green leaves. The dried tea has a light, somewhat fruity and floral scenting which I found much more pronounced in the brewed tea than the dried, which isn't always the case.I heated my water to a boil and then let it sit a few minutes, steeping the leaves for three minutes. The Mighty Leaf website lists other ingredients as California sunflowers, cactus flowers and rhubarb, none of which I could pick up taste wise...but then again, none of the above ingredients are a big part of my daily diet...Still and all, the blending of the flavors I thought was beautifully done and this tea yields up a light flavor with nuances of what I thought were slightly orange-y (perhaps the rhubarb) and sort of vanilla-y.
I thought the flavor of the tea was fairly mild and pleasant, very appropriate for a morning cup. There was a hint of astringency at a three minute steep, but no bitterness to the taste to start, I got a hint of bitterness at the bottom of the cup where it seemed to settle. I would probably steep this next time at two to two and a half minutes to get a better feeling for the flavors and none of the bitterness.
My second infusion was not super sturdy, but it was pleasant and lacked bitterness.
This tea takes sweetener very well and has a really lovely flavor profile...I think it must be the rhubarb which really gives a neat flavor, rather citrusy but mellow. I guess I didn't need to wait till Spring this year for my rhubarb fix, and this tea requires a lot less sugar!
