Spicy Chocolate Rooibos is the first tea that I have sampled from David's Tea, a Canadian company with a really spectacular website that offers a wide variety of tea and tea-related products. As is often the case, I sampled this tea prior to checking out the details of this tea online. Based on the name of this tea and the fact that I could see little pink peppercorns in the rooibos mix, I (with reason) prepared myself for a rooibos tea featuring sweet (from the chocolate) and spicy (from the peppercorns) flavors. My immediate reaction after my very first sip was "Who put a banana in my tea?". My second reaction was " I definitely taste banana here, but why would there be banana in a tea called Spicy Chocolate Rooibos". As soon as I was able to access a computer, I had to check the David's Tea website to figure out what was going on with this tea. The website states the following "What could be better than chocolate and pink peppercorn? How about chocolate, pink peppercorn and banana! With sweet bits of apple.". I was relieved to see that I wasn't delusional about the banana flavor. While it was an unexpected ingredient in the tea, the banana actually was a refreshing surprise, even more so because the flavor was completely authentic...no artificial candy-like banana flavor here. After further sampling the tea, I noted that the banana flavor is actually the predominant flavor in the blend; the chocolate flavor is a distant second, and the peppercorn spiciness is almost undetectable. I couldn't really taste any apple flavor, but I am sure the apple, as well as the banana, contributed to an overall sweetness of the tea. I found the tea to be sufficiently sweet on its own, without the need to add any sugar or honey. In all, while this was a really tasty blend and certainly not something you come across every day, I am not sure the name of this tea accurate reflects the flavor that is delivered. The name of the tea prepared me for one type of tea experience, but the actual taste of the tea is completely different from what I expected. Still, I would certainly recommend this tea to banana-lovers, as it delivers a true banana flavor, and this tea was a great product to introduce me to David's Teas and the quality of their produces. As a last note, I would recommend infusing this blend for at least seven minutes, because the tea just seems a tad bit weak if infused for smaller amounts of time.
