Choice Organic Teas, an extremely environmentally friendly Seattle-based tea crafter, claims to be the first company in the United States to introduce certified organic and Fair Trade Certifiedâ„¢ teas. Their Whole Leaf Organics line is packaged in fully biodegradable tea pyramids.
I've had tea steeped in tea pyramids before. I was not impressed. I considered it a gimmick to justify the imprisonment and suffocation of innocent tea leaves. So I wasn't all that excited to try this tea. I decided to prove my suspicions correct by running my own private taste test and comparing the tea pyramid tea to a loose leaf English Breakfast tea I recently purchased.
Perhaps what turns people into tea snobs who revile tea bags is the olfactory pleasure of tea making. It seems a bit odd to sniff a tea bag and I'm not always sure if I'm smelling the tea or the material that makes up the bag. Nevertheless, this silly looking device filled with tea smelled fresh and minty. Wet, it had a similar, but stronger scent with the additional of a slight vegetal order.
I steeped the tea for 4 minutes in eight ounces of water. I also added half and half (something I've been told one should never do - milk only). I'm very sorry to admit - it tasted fantastic. It had the characteristic smooth and malty flavor that I love about English Breakfast teas. And I suspect it would have been even better with a four minute steep time.
As for my chagrined whole leaf English Breakfast tea..... I walked discreetly to the sink and watched it as it disappeared down the drain - along with my superior attitude regarding tea.
