"... if you like oolongs, I can’t imagine that you won’t enjoy Rishi’s Bao Zohng."

Rishi Tea, founded in 1997, offers organic loose-leaf tea imported from tea gardens across Asia. This Milwaukee-based company is the winner of seven First Place Awards for Best Tea at the 2008 World Tea Championship and the only company to win with Certified Organic tea.Bao Zhong is a lightly oxidized oolong from Taiwan that has similarities to both green and oolong tea. The dry leaves posses a rather promising and enjoyable smell reminiscent of both black and green tea with a puzzling hint of mintyness. The website suggests and I steeped one tablespoon of tea in eight ounces of water. The liquor has a rather complex and synthetic odor that reminded me of mixed nuts, plastic and lilac.
I accidentally steeped my first cup for only 2.5 minutes. This produced an extremely mild brew that was pleasant, but not flavorful and devoid of an aftertaste. I also detected just a hint of cinnamon - call me crazy.
Steeped for four minutes (Rishi recommends between three and four) the leaves produce a much better tasting and fuller bodied cup of tea. The cinnamon taste was replaced with more floral flavors.
I’m sure this was a fine oolong, but I have to be honest - I just don’t find oolong tea to be all that exciting. And perhaps because I began drinking it in Chinese restaurants, it seems like a tea that is best enjoyed with a meal. However, if you like oolongs, I can’t imagine that you won’t enjoy Rishi’s Bao Zhong.
