kokomograpefruitblackI'll start by saying that the idea of a grapefruit tea sounded pretty oddball to me. I wasn't sure what to make of it so I thought the best solution to my ambivalence would be to give Kokomo's grapefruit black tea a try.

To cut out any suspense, I'll just write that it was quite good! I liked it. The black tea base is comprised of near jet colored short to medium twists of leaves, with small pieces of dried grapefruit peel standing out against the black. The dry leaf has the distinct citrus scenting of grapefruit. I used a heaped tablespoon of the tea to 24 ounces of water heated to a boil and allowed to cool just slightly. I steeped for 3 minutes, which yielded an attractive dark brew.

The black tea base is sturdy, but not complex, and brewed without bitterness or bite. The grapefruit turns out to be an inspired touch to the black tea. How should I describe the flavor and scenting of grapefruit vs. other citrus fruits like lemon or orange? I just got home from Florida, so here's a beachy metaphor, just for fun. Grapefruit would be bathing on the beach in a modest one piece suit whereas the lemons or oranges would be hanging out in bikinis. I love grapefruits for that very reason as much as I love the other citrus for the other reason. Instead of a jazzy, spicy citrus tea as you'd expect from an orange or lemon based tea, what you have is a subtle and almost serious, not to say sour, but pronounced grapefruit flavor. And the taste of the grapefruit in this tea is truly a best case scenario. It's not weird and overwhelming and in your face. Instead, its nuances permeate the entire tea very subtly and your strongest taste of the citrus comes at the very beginning but mostly at the end of each sip. And the black tea base is complimented by the flavor. It would be non descript on its own but instead is complimented in a wonderful and surprising way.

Kokomo has really found a surprising flavor match up here. I really enjoyed this cup.
