Kudos to Rishi tea for providing products that are organic AND fair trade. Their Peppermint Rooibos Blend falls into both categories. Rishi made an impressive showing at the 2008 World Tea Championship, whereby seven of their blends took home Best Tea awards, including this very blend (Best Mint Blend). This is the second rooibos/peppermint blend that I've had. The first was prepared fresh at a local tea shop after I told them I was feeling a bit under the weather. It was a nice blend to sip while laid up in bed. However, Rishi's blend really takes the cake.
As to be expected with any peppermint blend, the mint takes the driver's seat. Aromatically and flavor-wise, this is powerfully minty, which adds to its naturally sweetness. The mint is top-notch stuff, evoking a superior freshness unlike many bagged mint teas. However, the rooibos does come through as well, also lending to the enjoyable naturally sweet tone. These two ingredients are a perfect marriage - both with calming/relaxing effects, and both with natural sweetness. The quality of the ingredients here is excellent. There are also natural oils of peppermint and bergamot added to enhance the flavor - in this case, the additives are not a bad thing at all.
The infusion results in a deep red hue. I've tried this blend both hot and iced, and it is equally great in both capacities. The mint lingers on your palette long after the sip is in your tummy, leaving a cooling, refreshing and cleansing feeling.
I'm somewhat of a fan of minty teas in general, but this far exceeds most (if not all) of the tried and true blends I've enjoyed.
