I'm still fairly new to oolong teas, and until now I've never tried a flavored oolong. I was expecting it to be like most of the flavored green teas I've tried: delicious in it's own right, but the flavoring overpowers the underlying green tea. That's not always a bad thing (I love me some mango green tea), but with oolong I imagined it as the kiss of death. My favorite part of an oolong tea is the complex flavor of the tea itself, and if that wasn't present, well, I might as well just drink an herbal tea.This tea far surpassed that expectation, though. My first impression, after taking a whiff of the dried leaves, was popcorn. Oddly enough, at least to me, the combination of coconut and oolong smells like popcorn. Some careful smelling reveals both the oolong and the coconut flavors, but if you don't think about it and just let them work together, it smells like popcorn.
As it brews, though, the oolong takes the stage. The rich, vegetal flavor of the oolong is quite a bit stronger than the coconut, but it doesn't overpower it, and the same goes for the brewed cup. It still tastes a bit like popcorn in the after taste, but it's vague and you have to be looking for it. Otherwise, the oolong is still the central player, and the coconut provides a lovely, lightly sweet companion flavor to it; not too strong, but not invisible, either.
Bottom Line: This is an excellent flavored oolong, and if you're fan of oolong and coconut, do not hesitate to try this! This is definitely going to become a staple in my cupboard.
