|"Tantalizing...more on the minty than the chocolate side, but a nice blending of the two that should satisfy an evening sweet tooth."|
This jet black tea has shortish leaves, chunks of chocolate throughout and lighter little chunks that turn out to be tiny packages bursting with the taste of crystallized mint oil, wonderfully flavorful. The scenting of this tea is definitely like a chocolate mint or liqueur, with mint being predominant though the dry leaf is full of the scent of chocolate as well. The mint oil is of a strength that really travels through your sinuses. I would recommend this highly as an after dinner treat, which indeed the Teavana website does, as well. The website mentions hazelnut as an ingredient in this tea, and I'll note that the hazelnut was not a flavor I picked up at all.
I brewed the tea with freshly boiled water, at 3 minutes, a tablespoon to 24 ounces of tea. Once steeped, the scent is lighter but still tantalizing and more on the minty than the chocolate side. The flavor was quite nice. The chocolate flavor was a bit subdued, but present enough for a nice aftertaste and the mint is really well done. It's a very aromatic, oily mint flavor that permeates fully, leaving a pleasant flavor in the mouth.
The black tea base is quite mild. I think a stronger base might have made for a fuller experience tastewise, possibly shoring up and rounding out the chocolate flavor a bit, which I would have liked - being the chocolate lover that I am and given the strength of the mint oil. I would have enjoyed the tea even more if the chocolate could have been a little creamier and stronger, but overall, this was a refreshing, minty and chocolate-y tea that would make for an excellent dessert tea. The lightness of the black tea is also fairly sensible given that this would best be served with or as a dessert, and a rip roaring strong black tea is not necessarily what we most need before bedtime.
This tea would definitely cure a sweet tooth...though frankly it would be quite nice with dessert as well. A nice ending for a good meal, especially with friends to share the taste with.
