tavalonkashmirichaiTavalon's Kashmiri Chai is, visually speaking, a very appealing blend. This chai blend features ample cardamom pods and large almond slivers which are readily visible among the dried leaves. The dried leaves are fairly dark in color and were, for the most part, in the form of small nuggets. Although the dried leaves had a dark color to them, when brewed, the leaves opened up to reveal that this is actually a green tea, and not a black tea. The tea itself is very pale in color, even when two teaspoons of the leaves were brewed. According to the Tavalon website, the tea leaves are of Indian origin. The brew smells sweet and spicy, just as one expects from a Chai. The aroma was dominated by the cardamom, which is not surprising given how abundant they were in the blend. As with any chai, I prepared this one with lots of milk and sugar. In retrospect, because this is a green tea base and brews to such a pale liquid, I should have used much less milk than I would for a heavier and darker black tea base. The flavor was fairly pungent and again, dominated by the cardamom. Personally, I find that cardamom can be a bit overpowering, and would have preferred a lesser contribution from it. I was also disappointed to find that even though there were so many almonds in the blend, it was actually pretty difficult to detect any almond flavor in the brewed tea. Overall, this wasn't a bad chai, and while it was certainly enjoyable, it lacked anything that would qualify it as remarkable. Being a green chai, this may have appeal simply because it's a more unusual type of chai. However, in the grand scheme of things, I found this tea to be decent, but forgettable.
