Now that I'm trying to explore the depths of my memories, I can think of a single time I have had a flavoured oolong. I love oolongs' complex and interesting flavours, and I have never thought one I've tried needed, or would even necessarily benefit, from adding another flavour. By no means am I saying I dreaded trying this tea, but I figured from the start that it would be a new and interesting experience.Kokomo boasts that their Orange Blossom Oolong tastes just like an orange creamcicle, and the leaves smell rather orange-ish. Once steeped, however, much of the orange scent disappears leaving the tea to smell mostly of the oolong tea base. Since I expected a bold orange flavour, I would say the orange taste is somewhat lacking in the end result. I hoped for a strong orange cup but was left with a flavour only faintly detectable throughout each sip. As the cup cooled, the orange flavour became even meeker and was replaced with a creamier taste.
The upside of the softer orange flavour is that the oolong itself stands out, and it is an excellent one: A full-bodied tea that boldly presents its hearty flavour with every sip. If Kokomo had declared in their description that this was a dark oolong with a faint orange flavour in the background, I would have approached my cup very differently and probably been more pleased with the result. The way it stands, however, I am left feeling somewhat disappointed. I probably would have preferred just the plain oolong base without any (somewhat unsuccessful) added frills.
