adagiojasminebloomBlooming teas often get a lot of flack from the snobby community for being a lower-quality tea than many of their less exciting counterparts. When it comes to deceiving the less experienced tea drinker, hiding a lower-quality tea behind the mask of a beautiful (or in the case of teabags, convenient) presentation is often effective, and the end result often comes up short on flavour.

To tell the truth, I didn't have super-high hopes for Adagio's blooming teas. They're very inexpensive for a tied tea, costing $10 for ten balls, and I find Adagio's teas rather hit-and-miss with very few teas falling in-between. I pessimistically pegged this as a tea that would fall well into the "miss" category.

I pegged wrong. I have had a few flowering teas that take awhile to bloom, which is a problem because it means you don't get to see the full flowering effect before the tea becomes oversteeped. For my first pot, I only left the tea for about 2 1/2 minutes, and the bloom was already in its full glory by then, with the jasmine rising up like smoke in the water (or perhaps fire in the sky). Even with such a short steep, the flavour, while delicate and light, was still full and strongly jasmine.

The second and third pots I left for about 3 1/2 minutes each, and both were equally good and well-rounded in flavour. I shared with my company, and everyone agreed that this tea makes an excellent, quality cup. The presentation wasn't quite as glorious for the latter pots because the jasmine flower didn't manage to rise up again, but the bundle had been well-tied enough that it never broke apart in the water - a problem that I usually have with blooming teas. When I was done with all the tea deliciousness (9 cups in all for a bundle costing only $1), I only had to take out the bundle, throw it away, and quickly rinse my pot.
