Thumbs up!"This is a creative and distinct blend with much to offer. While the usual cast of characters provide the underlying spiciness that is expected of any self-respecting chai, the coconut and lemongrass add layer and depth to this tea. "

adagiothaichaiAdagio recently revealed a new line of chai blends, one of which is the Thai chai. Adagio describes their Thai chai blend as follows: "Silky sweet coconut and playful bright lemongrass highlight this seductive black tea chai blend." The various leaves, pods, spices, and fruit etc. that make up this blend exist as rather large pieces in the visually attractive blend, although the tea leaves themselves are rather small and appear to be about 50% of the dry blend. I prepared my sample by steeping two heaping teaspoons in 8oz of water for about 3.5 minutes, then adding a generous amount of milk and sugar to the brewed liquid. As I began to taste the tea, my initial attitude was one of "here's another chai that will taste just like so many other chai blends I have had". However after only one sip, I realized how wrong I was. This is a creative and distinct blend with much to offer. While the usual cast of characters provide the underlying spiciness that is expected of any self-respecting chai, the coconut and lemongrass add layer and depth to this tea. I would say that the lemongrass is a bit more prominent than the coconut, but even so, the coconut adds a wonderful twist to the tea. The lemongrass and coconut appear to tone down the spiciness by adding sweet-citrus notes. This blend paired wonderfully with the milk and sugar, and I wouldn't imagine drinking this one any other way. The bottom line here is that I was really impressed with this blend. I have to admit that even though I initially delved into the world of loose lea tea via Adagio, I eventually became disappointed with Adagio after sampling so many other tea merchants. However, the Thai chai was a redeeming brew for me, and one that puts Adagio back in good standing.

One Response to “Review: Adagio Thai Chai”

  1. Erin Says:

Sweet and smooth, it’s surprising how the small dash of coconut (tasted at the end of a sip) blends so effortlessly with the traditional chai notes. A nice change for Chai adorers, and even those new to Chai. Cinnamon and bite are present but are mellowed out with other exciting additions, yet not left behind enough where you feel cheated from the full spice effect.
