Not Great"A tad too bitter but it seems like underneath that bitterness lies a soft Darjeeling."

tavalonmargaretsI have often heard that Margret's Hope Darjeeling was one of the most sought after Darjeeling teas and is the 'champagne of tea'. That is quite a bit to live up to I would say. So I was pretty darn excited to try a Margaret's Hope for the first time. I've had other types of Darjeeling teas and so I was confident this would turn out great. The dry leaves of this particular one are short and brown with some green mixed in. A soft, sweet, and muscatel scent came from them.

I used 1 teaspoon of leaf in 8oz of boiling water for 3 minutes to steep this tea. As I poured it into my cup, I loved golden amber color and was ready to try my first taste of a popular type of tea. I was sad to have been greeted with a bitter taste. It was too bitter for me to really enjoy. After a few sips I put in a little bit of sugar to see if that helped. No luck. I could still taste the bitterness and the sugar just made the tea taste awkward. The sugar didn't cover up the bitterness but instead really muddied the whole cup. I could only manage to drink half the cup. And I did try to find other flavors or good qualities. I really did. The taste behind the bitterness was soft and it may be a great tea if prepared differently. But my own taste buds could not get past the obvious bitterness. Perhaps this particular tea is for people who may like a little bit of a bite to their tea. I don't.

Hi Jenn! Please see my review of this tea where I discovered that a lower temp and/or shorter steeping will reveal a delightful (non-bitter) tea! Give it another try – it’s really a great product when “properly” brewed to taste. 🙂

Thanks Dan! I will most definitely give it a try at a lower temp. 🙂

Wanted to add that I did finally try using a lower temp (about 190 degrees)and I discovered that doing so produces a much better and enjoyable cup. Thanks again, Dan!
