Adagio is one of those companies that I have fallen in and out of love with. When I first started getting into tea, I discovered them and thought they were the schiz. However, I then ordered a ton of their black tea samples and found that you have really stay on top of them in order to not get a bad cup (bitter). Also, their chocolate flavor that they use in many of their blends just tastes so fake to me. Anyway, that whole experience kind of made them fall from grace with me a bit. However, being a chai lover and a lover of pretty much all Thai tea, I was compelled to request this sample.
I prepared this blend with water that had been brought to a full boil and allowed to cool a bit and infused the blend for 4 min. It is also worth noting that Adagio suggests using 2 heaping tsps of this for a 6 oz cup and infusing for 5 min. I did use the 2 tsps but prepared an 8 oz cup. Since this is a chai blend, I also lightly sweetened this from the start. I am very pleased with the way this came out. The black tea base is not bitter and the flavor profile is very tasty with a nice balance of coconut and lemongrass. Normally, I like my chai in an Assam base, but with the chai ingredients used here, this is actually pretty nice. Adagio does not actually list the chai ingredients in this blend, but there is some ginger and cinnamon for sure.
I think this might become my go-to summer chai blend. It has a touch of spice undertone, but the coconut and lemongrass steal the show for sure. I also think this might be good as an iced chai latte? This blend is tasty enough to make me think that maybe it is time to give Adagio another chance. If you like Thai flavors and chai, then this is a good choice.
Also, if you are looking for some additional items from Adagio to fill your shopping cart, then I might suggest their Coconut Pouchong (oolong) or their Hazelnut Black tea.
