Stash has decided to join the plethora of companies that have married vanilla flavor with Rooibos tea. Their vanilla comes from Madagascar and Tahiti while the Rooibos comes from South Africa, natch. This dried blend had a bit of an odd aroma - not entirely offputting, but not quite what is to be expected of a vanilla Rooibos blend. I stuck with the typical 5 minte blend with freshly-boiled water, as I do with all Rooibos teas. It brewed up to the usual deep red liquor that Rooibos always produces, and the cup has a gassy/grainy aroma to it. The spent leaves give off a somewhat sour, pungent smell. The taste of this cup is more nutty and grainy than most other Rooibos teas I have favored. It provides an interesting juxtaposition to the usual Rooibos blends I imbibe on a regular basis, as it's quite different from the pack, whereas most of the others have similar characteristics to one another. This one stands out - but not in a favorable way for my taste palette. It's almost more "boring" that any other blend I've tried. What I look for in a Rooibos is something with that mild sweetness, and almost creamy caramel-like flavor that's barely there. Here, Stash's blend is considerably more nutty/grainy in taste (not texture), and without much of anything to give it anything extra to make it special.
Oddly enough, nary a trace of vanilla is found in the taste or scent of this tea. While I'm pleased that Stash did not overdo it with the vanilla dousing that too often accompanies similarly-flavored blends, something slightly more tangible would have been beneficial when offering a blend touting the presence of vanilla.
