This tea is designed to be great hot or iced." ---Zhi Tea website.Mangos are a fruit that I enjoy, but seldom purchase for consumption at home. They have a delicious and sweet flavor that is hard to describe and I suspect harder to translate into an artificial tea flavor. Thus, I have chosen to stay clear of mango flavored teas until I saw that Zhi had put one out on the market. Zhi Tea is one of those companies that I feel very comfortable recommending their offerings to others and occasionally make a purchase from. So, in my mind, Zhi Tea and mango tea equals the possibility of a good mango tea.
One thing to note about this tea is that the base used here is Assam and it does bitter quite easily. I do caution that you will want to use care when brewing this because, otherwise, you will end up with a rather bitter and nasty cup. I infused this with water brought to steaming but cut short of boiling and infused the leaves for just 3 min. The first thing that I noticed about the cup is that Zhi did, in fact, manage to make a very natural tasting mango tea. In my opinion, this one is definitely best enjoyed with a bit of sweetener. The tea base is definitely not bad when you get the brewing parameters right, but that is the tricky thing about this cup. While the black tea base used is an Assam, it does not seem to exhibit a lot of the astringency that many Assams divulge. At the urging of Zhi Tea, I did try this iced and found it excellent that way as well.
I am quite impressed at the authenticness and natural taste of the mango flavor in this tea. If you love mangos, then this one is a must try. This tea would receive a better score from me if it had a better black tea base. While I am one that occasionally had been known to hate on Assams, I do not dislike the tea base because of its heavy Assam properties, but more rather for its tendency to oversteep and bitter so easily. Zhi, I love this, but would encourage you to consider other bases for such a delicious flavor. However, when properly steeped, this is delish!
