Maeda-en specializes in Japanese green teas and is a company that would have been unknown to me if it hadn't been for my involvement with Teaviews. Their Sen-cha Fukamushi Select is a deep-steamed sencha tea, whose extra processing results in a finer leaves that are easily powdered. I instantly noted this in my sample, as many of the leaves had crumbled to such small particle sizes that the tea almost resembled matcha. The dry leaves had a strong spinachy aroma. The tea brewed to a dark yellowish-green color and was slightly cloudy, which is not to be unexpected given that the leaves are fine and crubmle easily to make small tea dust. In fact, the Maeda-en website says "Leaves tend to crumble because of this extra processing, and gives the tea its signature opaque quality". The flavor was mildly astringent and characterized by grass, spinach, and earth notes; the overall impression of this tea is that it has a robust flavor. Although not a heavy-bodied tea, this tea has a strong flavor that is sure to satisfy green tea lovers. I detected a hint of a nutty flavor in the aftertaste, which was quite pleasing. Because many of the leaves formed a fine powder, this tea has some attributes that were comparable to a matcha. I am typically not a huge fan of senchas, as I find they can be a bit too grassy for me, but this one has some nice earthy and nutty notes to balance out the "greenness". In all, this is a decent sencha, although probably not what most people think of when looking for a sencha. This tea strikes me as a good accompaniment to a meal, but it is also savory and hearty enough to stand alone. This tea is a moderately priced tea, being sold at a cost of $9.40 for 3 oz.
