I have previously sampled two of the six chai teas that make up Adagio's new chai line. My past two Adagio chais were super tasty, so I was looking forward to another great experience with their Bengal green chai. As the name implies, this is a green tea (of Chinese origin) blended with chai spices, described as "chakra warming spice combination" on the Adagio website. This tea brews to a very bold and spicy tea. The spice flavor is comparable to the other Adagio chai teas, however the strength of the spices just seems much more intense because the green tea is so mild. The spice level was actually was a little too strong for me and what little green tea I tasted seemed to clash with the spices. To me, ample amounts of both milk and sugar are needed to make a perfect cup of chai. These are necessary not only to sweeten the tea, but also to keep the spices in check. I have yet to meet a green tea or a green tea blend to which I think adding either of these is appropriate, and the same holds true for this blend. Without adding milk and sugar, the tea was a bit harsh. I didn't totally despise this tea, but when I am in the mood for chai, I will reach for one with a black tea base. Although the spices used in this blend were excellent and the green tea seems to be a fairly high quality tea, in the end I just had a personal dislike of the combination of green tea and chai spices. My mediocre rating on this tea reflects my personal reaction to the flavors, but in no way suggests a low-quality product.
