purity.jpgI'd been waiting quite some time to review this one, as it is recommended as essentially a hangover remedy. I have been planning to purposely go on a bit of a bender to test this teas applicability (hey, it's all in the name of research), but I have been a bit under the weather as of late and not much feeling up to a drinking binge. In fact, the persistent sore throat and headache and general ill-feeling seemed to be begging for this blend, so I dug right in.

This blend features Ceylon black tea with a generous portion of peppermint, and a sprinkling of ginger root. Indeed, this does sound like Hangover's Little Helper. Ginger soothes the stomach, peppermint is soothing and is reported to help with irritable bowel syndrome, and the black tea provides the caffeine kicker to help with that throbbing noggin.

The equal balance of the Ceylon and peppermint leaves seems proportionally perfected. The peppermint takes a front seat on the nose, as it's wont to do, but it is not overbearing whatsoever. The black tea is also present behind the minty aroma; the ginger is not detectable by scent. Tavalon recommends a 5 minute brew with freshly boiled water. This is what I stuck with for almost every cup I've boiled, but I can't help but wonder now if a longer steeping might be even more beneficial. The liquor produced is a nice, deep hue, and the aroma in the cup has a similar vibe to that of the dried leaves - a more "earthy" toned down version of peppermint.

Peppermint is usually paired with other herbals, so to have it here mixed with a black tea is something new to my palette. The Ceylon tends to take it down a notch, and the blend of flavors is intriguing for sure. The peppermint is still at the front, but the ceylon is definitely there, as it was on the nose. Again, ginger is not making its presence known, and I wonder if double, or even triple the percentage of it in the mix might not be a bad idea. The cup is somewhat tame and weaker than expected from a peppermint tea, but again, I attribute that to the Ceylon's interaction. The quality and potency of the mint is just-right, and the added kick from the Ceylon is bonus. A second steeping provides a more watery taste, but is still a satisfactory cup.

Tavalon's Purity kept me going through a few days of sore-throated malady and stinging headaches. I can definitely imagine this would be great for that morning-after cure as well, and I intend to save the last pinch just for that purpose when the time comes.
