"Our premium rooibos is blended with a delicious honey vanilla flavor to create a naturally sweet brew that is fully satisfying and completely caffeine free." Kalahari website.Ok, so vanilla rooibos is a regular staple in my tea cupboard. It is one of those blends that I like to drink both by itself and and also to use in blending teas together. Sometimes I get a blend (and it doesn't have to just be another rooibos--could be black, green, or white tea) and think it would be better with a little more vanilla in it. I will then add a bit of the vanilla rooibos next time I prepare it and it will often become an entirely different, and often better, blend. That said, not all vanilla rooibos' are created equal. I have sampled several vanilla rooibos blends side-by-side and I have to say that the vanilla rooibos that Teavana (foolishly) discontinued remains my favorite. I am not doing a side-by-side comparison at this time because this is not a plain vanilla rooibos, but one with a honey vanilla flavor.
One nice thing about making rooibos is that it is low-maintenance. No worries if the water boils or if you forget about it and steep it for 10 min. The aroma coming from the dry bag is dominated by the aroma of rooibos and accompanied by a mellow vanilla scent. I let this steep for a nice long time so that the flavor could fully develop. This is a nice, average vanilla rooibos blend to my taste buds. I don't taste a whole lot of honey notes in this. They might become more distinguishable if sampled side-by-side with a plain vanilla rooibos, but I am not noticing a strong honey presence. The vanilla flavor does not drown out the taste of the rooibos base and I did like this best with a few rocks of rock cane sugar. I didn't add honey to this because I did not want its presence to fool my taste buds in terms of the honey notes that this blend offers.
This is tasty, but necessarily whip out my credit card because I must buy some now tasty. I doubt this could de-throne my Teavana Vanilla Rooibos as my all-time favorite, but I do think this is a nice option for when the convenience of a tea bag is needed. If you find loose tea to be a huge hassle and are committed to using bagged teas, then I would suggest giving this a shot.
