I have been really dabbling in the world of flower infused teas, with surprising success in taste. I generally don't expect to be a huge fan of super floral blends, though I've been surprised by a couple. I think I had a different taste in mind when I approached Mighty Leaf's Chrysanthemum infused tea.For one thing, I somehow imagined the chrysanthemums would look rather like that millions of potted varieties that appear everywhere starting in late august and lasting through the early fall. You know them...sort of banal, but nice to look at, and always in pretty, autumnal colors, gold, russet reds, purples, etc. Well, all of the chrysanthemums in the Mighty Leaf blend were a soft pretty white. The dry leaf tea is nice to look at, a pretty silver needle base with big, button sized flowers interspersed generously. The smell is faint, not strongly perfumed and certainly not floral. I found the scent to be lightly astringent, almost reminiscent of a medicinal herbal blend. This is not an intense, rosy or jasmine-y type of floral blend.
I heated my water to 185 degrees and steeped about 5 minutes. Brewed, the tea is pale and faintly golden, champagne colored. I found that my initial tastes found the tea to be lightly astringent in taste, not at all floral or heavily perfumed. I almost noted what I can best describe as a slightly peppery taste to the tea, which was quite unusual and not unpleasant. The tea has a mild taste, very clean on the palate, not being overly sweet. I thought that the tea seemed sweeter to me as I became accustomed to the flavor imparted by the chrysanthemum. I still find it somewhat difficult to place the taste of this tea. It was lightly astringent and faintly sweet, which was a nice balance. I enjoyed the cup but don't see it being one I would reach for often, though as blends go, it is a curiosity that I'd be inclined to suggest people try. Someone wanting a distinct flowery taste (similar to jasmine) probably wouldn't be impressed with the subtle, almost medicinal flavor of this blend, but might find it very interesting to try, as I did. I enjoyed the lightness of taste, and the slight astringency of the brew was pleasing to the palate as well. This is one of the more interesting, if not the most delicious or exciting, floral blends I've tried, in the sense that it's not a flavor I've ever experienced in my repertoire.
