Usually when I come across a combination in tea such as kiwi and watermelon, it is in a fruit tisane or paired with a mild green tea base. That is not the case here as this is actually paired with black tea. I was immediately curious if such a flavor combo would pair well with a black tea base, so I was quick to add this blend to my sample request. Plus, I love watermelon anything (kiwi rocks too).At the time of this review, this blend appears to be sold out on the Simpson & Vail website as I could not find it. Therefore, I cannot comment on the ingredients in this blend. The black tea leaves are small and broken, and the aroma of the dry blend is very fruity and sweet. Per the instructions of some of the other flavored black tea blends featured on the company's , I infused this for 3 min in water that had been brought to a full boil and allowed to cool for a full minute. The flavor profile is indeed fruity and sweet and both watermelon and kiwi flavors are distinguishable. Unfortunately, this blend seemed to lose some of its appeal as it cooled. I found that the flavor profile began to seem a bit at odds with the black tea base. It isn't that it is bad, but just not fully harmonious. In my opinion this is due to a low quality black tea base that bitters easily and seems to have a bit a smoke to it.
Since kiwi and watermelon are what I consider to be summer fruits, I decided to make this iced as well. Not surprisingly, I enjoyed this best iced and would definitely consume this blend prepared that way and not hot. However, the ultimate downfall of this blend is the black tea base. I do feel that this blend could work as a black tea, but with a better base. Only then, could I consider purchasing any of this.
