Kukicha is a green tea that is also known as twig tea. Called so because it contains tiny twigs along with the green tea leaves. Intriguing. I tried to find information about this tea on the Boulder Tea website, but I failed to find any. So without brewing instructions I followed the general rule for brewing green teas which is steeping for 3 minutes in water that was 180 degrees. The dry tea leaves/twigs are lovely shades of dark and light green. They look a whole lot like grass clippings in shape and size but fortunately don't taste like it. The color of the steeped tea is a pale yellow green and omits a pleasing fragrance that smells grassy and ever so slightly nutty with a smidge of something sweet. The taste is similar to the fragrance apart from some bitter flavors that develop in the after taste. It reminds me of a pretty basic green tea taste adding in a little bit of nutty sweetness.
I would have loved this tea if it was not for the bitterness. The bitterness was not overpowering, but it was there none the less. I happen to be the kind of person that doesn't want any sort of bitterness in tea. And for that reason I didn't rate it as highly as I would have liked to. If you don't mind the slight bitterness, or perhaps astringent is a better term, this is an interesting tea that contains a good mix of different green flavors.
