If I was trapped on a desert island, and I could only have one type of tea for the rest of my life, well... I couldn't choose. But if I could only have one type of green tea, it would probably be sencha. It's versatile, delicious, and generally leaning thoroughly towards the affordable. It has been awhile since I had this staple in my tea cupboard, so it's about time I found a good leaf to consistently have around. The journey begins at Maeda-en, a company specializing in Japanese teas. This is my first tea from this company, but their no-frills leaves are appealing. As their site says, their Fukamushi Select is steamed longer than regular sencha, resulting in a medium-bodied brew. Their site also says to steep one tablespoon in 9-12 ounces of 160-190 degree water, and who am I to disobey.
The resulting brew is a deep green-yellow (or maybe yellow-green. I'm not sure which since I don't have my Crayola box handy) and somewhat cloudy, as is to be expected. I find this tea is medium-bodied, bordering on light, and somewhat simple. The overall flavour has a light grassy quality with a touch of nuttiness in the aftertaste. I don't find the flavour very distinctly sencha, but it is solidly green. This is a good tea - not exceptional, but good - and the price of $9.40/three ounces is something the average buyer can handle.
