The tea known as La Palais Gourmet's "Extreme Vanilla" has, as its name would suggest, some serious vanilla aroma and flavor going on. The dry blend smells strongly of vanilla, so much so that I couldn't even smell any of the green tea at all. The infusion process allowed the leaves to open up, revealing that the Japanese green tea leaves used were primarily whole leaves and large leaf pieces. Pieces of vanilla bean pods were also evident, and the La Palais Gourmet website indicates that the vanilla beans are from Madagascar, Tahiti and Indonesia. The liquid is a pale yellowish-brown color and it emitted a soothing vanilla fragrance. The vanilla was very authentic, smooth, and natural, and was without a trace of artificial flavoring. The flavor of this tea is, in fact, extreme vanilla. In fact, it's so extreme, that its just about impossible to identify the base as green tea, or any tea for that matter. The vanilla flavor is refreshing and sweet, and is accented by subtle floral notes at the end of each sip. I enjoyed this tea, however I would have liked to have seen a better marriage of vanilla with the gree tea rather than a mild green tea being overpowerd by such a strong vanilla component. Of course, I have to factor in price to this tea, and at $24.00 for 100g, this seems to be a bit pricy. I've had other vanilla green teas, such as the blend offered by Adagio, that may not have been as "extreme", but were still delicious and a quarter of the price.
