My journey to find a cupboard staple sencha began recently at Maeda-en, and it continues at the same company with their Sen-cha Select (Blender's series). Their Fukamushi is pleasant enough, but it was my first sample on my extremely new sencha journey, so I couldn't exactly quit after only the one tea. While this is among Maeda-en's less expensive offerings, I learned a long time ago that price does not always correspond directly to quality.I brewed this with one tablespoon of tea in 8 ounces of 180 degree water for about a minute and a half. For a sencha. this is a relatively bold tea with a "meaty," grassy flavour. Unfortunately, a touch of bitterness comes through and makes the tea harsher than I would prefer in this type of leaf. Overall, this has more flavour than Maeda-en's Fukamushi, but the cup isn't as smooth.
I find the second steep of this tea is one I prefer more to its first. It is milder, smoother, and has more of the characteristic grassy flavour. While good overall, I feel as though I stepped down a bit from the Fukamushi and would prefer to buy that any day, despite the fact that it costs more.
