gypsytea-coconut-chai.jpgMy love of coconut and my constant search for illusive, delicious bagged tea led me to this particular variety of Zhena’s Gypsy Tea.  When my sample arrived, I was very pleased to see a sachet filled with tea, cardamom, pepper, cloves, and all the other ingredients one usually associates with chai.  No tea dust or mystery ingredients here.  I was excited to give this tea a try.

As I prepared to brew myself a cup, the scent of the tea was very comforting and had the typical chai spiciness about it, but I didn’t notice any coconut aroma.  Another inspection of the sachet failed to identify anything that resembled a coconut piece or shaving.  I still had hopes the coconut flavor would come out during the steep and I prepared my cup.

I first tried the tea with no additions and was unable to taste anything that resembled coconut.  The tea had a very nice chai flavor though, and had the sample simply been called Zhena’s Gypsy Tea – Chai, I would have been perfectly happy.

After my search for coconut flavor proved unsuccessful after the first few sips, I decided to prepare the chai as I usually do by adding cream and agave.  Again, the tea itself was nice, but the coconut was nowhere to be found.  I must admit that I was disappointed with the lack of coconut, as that was the main reason this tea caught my eye.  However, I did enjoy this tea as a “basic” chai and I was very impressed with the quality of the ingredients.  I look forward to trying more varieties from this vendor.
