I was drawn to this tea because of the combination of fruit flavors which was unique and something I had not seen in a flavored tea. The mix of kiwi and watermelon sounded wonderful and so I was anxious to give this a try. I could not find any sort of information about this tea on the Simpson and Vail website, so I am unable to provide any background story to this tea.The dry leaves of this tea are dark, very small and smell incredibly fruity. The fragrance is almost dead on for the kiwi and watermelon. I steeped this using 1 teaspoon per cup with water that was boiling. After 4 minutes of steeping, I decanted the tea into my cup and inhaled the aroma of the steeped tea. I had to take a few minutes of concentration to figure out what I smelled. There were distinct fruit fragrances but there was something else mixed in. I could pick up a very faint smoky fragrance that I thought was a little odd for a fruit blend.
When I took my first sip, I was pleased to find that I could pick out the fruit flavors of kiwi and watermelon. They were strong and obvious. However, the black base really misses the mark for this tea. It seems stale, overpowering, and a little bitter. It clashed with the tasty flavors of the kiwi and watermelon. If it wasn’t for the black base, this would have been a really nice flavored tea. Changing it slightly would make a world of difference in my opinion. Overall, the whole tea isn’t bad. I didn’t detest it, but was sad it was lacking the good quality I wanted it to have.
