Thumbs up!"Overall, this was a smooth-drinking, light-bodied, yet satisfying brew, but one I would not recommend for multiple brews. "

norbuhuangHuang Jin Gui is the first Norbu Tea sample that I am trying, and we're off to a good start. According to Norbu's website, the name of this tea means "Royal Golden Turtle" and this tea was harvested in March of 2009. This tea appears similar to many oolongs- the darkish green leaves are rolled into little pellets that expand substantially when infused. This tea brews to a brilliant yellow cup. The tea has a nice, underlying floral-honey flavor whose basic essence is comparable to other oolongs, particularly Tie Guan Yins. However, the intensity of this floral flavor is much weaker in this particular tea. The tea also featured a very weak nutty flavor, almost as if it were an afterthought. Long after I had taken a sip of this tea, I could still taste this tea in my mouth as a weak yet very pleasant floral aftertaste. I later noted that Norbu's website also mentions this lingering aftertaste; since we both agreed on this aspect, this tea's staying power makes this tea stand out from other otherwise similar oolongs.
Since almost every oolong I have had is good for at least 2 cups, I infused my leaves a second time. I found the second infusion much too weak. I was disappointed at how poorly these leaves held up for a second infusion. The second infusion was VERY light, although still enjoyable and not worthy of being dumped out. It was best characterized as being a severely muted form of the first infusion. Overall, this was a smooth-drinking, light-bodied, yet satisfying brew, but one I would not recommend for multiple brews.
