"The resulting liquor was a rich reddish brown in color, with a rather flat aroma. The taste, however, was the sweetest I have experienced in a black tea, so sweet that I was tempted to forgo my usual splash of half and half. "

California Tea House’s Golden Monkey Paw is a hand picked black tea made from young leaves and bud of new season growth from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, China. The leaves are steamed, dried and fermented to bring out a mix of black and gold colors. “These perfect, prized tea leaves in our California Tea House collection resemble a monkey's paw, hence the name.”While I didn’t see any monkey paws, it is a very pretty tea, black leaves mixed with golden ones, that has a fresh hay aroma in the bag. Following the purveyor’s directions, I steeped two tablespoons (yes, tablespoons) of the tea in 208F water for just under two minutes. The resulting liquor was a rich reddish brown in color, with a rather flat aroma. The taste, however, was the sweetest I have experienced in a black tea, so sweet that I was tempted to forgo my usual splash of half and half. I went ahead and added it anyway, and found it brought out the sweetness even more, with a distinctly floral note and a slightly astringent edge.
A second steeping yielded another good cup, though with more astringency and less of that surprising sweetness.
This is a light, refreshing, delicious black, well suited to a late afternoon break with a cookie or two. Highly recommended.
