I will be the first person to admit that I am not a genmai-cha expert. However, I do know a good-tasting tea when I come across one. Maeda-en's Genmai-Cha Brown Rice Tea with Matcha now officially reigns as my favorite genmai-cha. As the name suggests, this tea is a mix of genmai-cha (Sen-cha leaves and a mixture of roasted & popped brown rice) and matcha (green tea powder). The result is a tea that is hearty, smooth, nutty, savory, slightly sweet...in a word: delicious! The green tea flavor is definitely present in grainy and vegetal notes, but it is not at all bitter. The matcha adds a wonderful little sweet kick to this tea and differentiates it from your standard genmai fare. The predominating flavor here is roasty and toasty, and completely enjoyable. I drank multiple cups of this tea before writing this review, and with each cup, my appreciation of this tea increased. This tea was good as a hot drink, but was also enjoyable at room temperature and cold (which I rarely say about green tea). For me, this tea was a big winner, and one I intend to purchase. At the ridiculously affordable price of $4.75 for 3 ounces, I can't afford not to buy this tea. I would highly recommend this to genmai-cha drinkers. It may be a little too earthy for those new to green tea, but the matcha could help one acquire a taste for green tea a bit faster than normal. The only potentially negative thing about this tea is the appearance. Due to the matcha, the tea is cloudy and gets a clump of powder that settles on the bottom. This did not bother me at all, as this is to be expected given that a fine powder is one of the ingredients. But if you are looking for a clear, pale yellowish-green liquid, you won't be getting that here! Anyway, now that my review is at its end, I am off to brew myself another cup of this delicious blend.
