"Our smooth China green tea with a chakra warming spice combination. Its natural sweetness and fiery kick will bring you back to center, no matter how polarized you've become. OOMMMMM OOMMMMM." --- Adagio website.Today has been a heck of a day for me personally (drama, drama, drama---though largely my own fault). It is also the first of many cooler September days and I found myself wishing I'd worn warmer clothes. Anyway, it just feels like Fall to me and Fall means that it is time to start drinking more Chai. I happen to love a nice spicy chai and some good chai tea is a comfort food to me. I rarely drink anything but black chai tea as I have always personally found that chai tastes best with a hearty black tea base. However, from time-to-time I find it necessary to revisit my tea ideals to see if my tastes have changed or if there is a blend out there that can change my mind.
Adagio does not list the ingredients for this blend but I am pretty sure that it contains clove, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon. I may have missed something and I can't be certain. Adagio recommends using 2 heaping teaspoons of this to prepare a 6 oz cup, which I did. I decided to first try this with sugar only added to the brew so I could get an idea as to the taste of the flavor tea base and flavor profile. Even with the quantity of tea used, the tea base is somewhat thin and watery. The spice load is reasonable for drinking without milk added. The spice mix is nicely balanced with no one ingredient completely dominating the flavor. A splash of milk really dulled the spices and took away the positives that I was enjoying about the brew.
Unfortunately, this blend is not one to change my mind about tea bases and chai blends. I still firmly believe that they are best done with strong black tea bases or, alternatively, a rooibos base. This green tea base just was too thin to support the spice load. I did enjoy the spice mix but this is not a blend that I would seek out for purchase. The nice thing about Adagio is that they offer reasonably priced samples and even a chai sampler if this one has piqued your interest.
