"A deep, dark Formosa Oolong tea from Taiwan sweetened with peach pieces and sunflowers." --- Tavalon website.Tavalon is a tea company that I have become familiar with through Teaviews. Their Serenity blend still remains one of my favorite night-time teas when I find myself in need of something relaxing and pure. It is always a pleasure to try any of their offerings. Since most any Taiwanese oolong tends to be a winner with me and I tend to like anything peach flavored, I doubt that this one can go wrong with me.
The aroma coming from my sample package is that of a very fragrant peach---and it smells delish! My sample consists of many broken pieces of dark oolong and some sunflower petal shreds. I prepared this with water cut just short of boiling and infused for 3 min. I will note that I later noticed that Tavalon suggests using water brought to a boil and also using 2 tsps for an 8 oz cup (I only used 1 heaping tsp). The resulting cup tastes of a tasty Formosa oolong with a touch of smokiness and also a little nuttiness. The oolong is rather smooth and leaves the mouth feeling just a tad dry. The peach flavor is much more subtle than the aroma indicates and that is probably a good thing. The peach taste is not elusive though. It complements the oolong nicely and does not overpower it.
Since I always like to follow the tea companys' suggestions when preparing my cup, I made a second preparation of this to see if it changed my perception of the drink. My original preparation included one teaspoon and water beginning to have bubbles and steaming, but cut plenty short of boiling. Tavalon suggests 2 tsps and water brought to a boil. There is little difference in the overall taste of the tea other than the obvious---their suggested preparation makes a much more robust cup. Either preparation actually tastes very good so it would be a matter of personal preference. Moving forward, I would probably use Tavalon's suggestion.
This is a solid offering from Tavalon. While I would not call this blend remarkable, it is not completely forgettable either. It is also very reasonably priced at $10 for 3.6 oz. If you like peaches and smoky oolong, then this is worth consideration. Also, don't forget to add Serenity to your order from Tavalon if you like rooibos, vanilla, chamomile and mint.
