Thumbs up!"A delicious Jasmine-infused green tea that is strong on the Jasmine - which is A-OK by me. Sweet, smooth, and tasty."

californiajasmineCalifornia Tea House offers another "exclusive" - they have taken Chinese Dragon Pearl green tea, and sprinkled in some fresh Jasmine flowers. The green tea is hand-picked (single buds) from the Fuding Dahao plant, then wound into tight little pearl-sized balls. The sample I received contained no visible Jasmine, so I am curious how the powerful scent of it has gotten infused into the tea so well. The aroma of the dried pearls is very nice - very gentle, with Jasmine on top of (but not overriding) the green tea. Both have a mild, gentle scent - so much so, that the plastic pouch that I keep the tea housed in has a stronger aroma!

Upon brewing, the jasmine scent really comes alive. CTH recommends sub-boiling water for 2-3 minutes. A first cupping at 2:30 produced an exquisite cup. The liquor became a slightly cloudy shade of yellow. The pearls unfurled to reveal leaves of varying shapes and sizes - but keeping curled up enough to allow for a second infusion, and yet even more visual spectacle. The jasmine aroma was perfect in the cup - much more strong than in the bag, and beautifully sweet. Not overly floral or vegetal in the slightest, the jasmine and green tea matched together very well. The green tea was definitely dominated in the cup by the jasmine, but I personally found it to be a plus. Not that I would have anything against the Dragon Pearls by themselves -- just that the Jasmine flavor is so smooth and lovely - and exactly what I was looking for, and hoping for, when I set out to brew this tea.

I brewed various subsequent cups, with steeps as long as 5 minutes, and with water as cool as 170 degrees or so, and each variation has been very nice - no big surprises or flavor shifts. No matter how I brewed it, the taste was very similar each time, and very fine at that. This tea can easily withstand a second infusion, and still produce a delicious cup.

As of this writing, this tea is currently on sale, so now is a particularly good time to take advantage.
