This black tea offering from Norbu tea originates in the Xishuangbanna Prefecture of Yunnan province, and was harvested in the spring of 2009.The dry leaves—dark brown with a scattering of golden tips—are long and twisted, and have a faintly sweet aroma. I steeped a heaping teaspoonful in a cup of 208F water for four minutes. The resulting liquor was an attractive dark, coppery brown, and very clear. The slight aroma was flat, like wet leaves. The flavor, however, made up for the lack. It was malty, a touch spicy, astringent, with a touch of sweetness in the finish. A splash of half and half brought out the flavors and mellowed them together. The purveyor also recommends this one for iced tea, and I agree. It is bold enough to stand up to ice. It’s not the richest tasting Yunnan I’ve had, but it’s not bad and $8.50 for 100g is quite reasonable.
I tried a second steeping of four minutes, but this one was flat and bitter. I think this is a one brew tea. This is not a bad Yunnan, but not a great one, either.
