Tea Forté's high-frills packaging and steeping systems are attractive and made me immediately skeptical. If they put this much effort into marketing, I always have to wonder what's left for tea. I realise that's an overly-critical way of thinking, but flashy companies have hurt me before in many more realms than just tea.I remained skeptical as I opened the package because I couldn't smell the leaves behind the infuser. I did a quick 30-second steep in 195 degree water to open up the leaves a bit then disposed of the infusion. Even after so short a time, it is abundantly clear this tea is not meant to be contained. The leaves will easily be expanding beyond the limits of any teabag, so I cut open the sachet and put the leaves directly into a pot.
I let my tea steep for 2 minutes, again with 195 degree water, and within seconds, Tea Forté has officially won me over. The tea is endlessly smooth, floral with a touch of citrus, and wonderfully buttery. It is interesting and an excellent oolong. After 2.5 minutes for the second steep, the leaves have erupted in size. They are still relatively small, but they are unbroken. This cup is more mellow, and by the third steep, the tea is completely relaxing and smooth.
Morally, I cannot recommend buying this in an infuser. This tea is too good to be caged, but it is thankfully available in a loose version, which is reasonably priced for the quality of the leaf. After trying two teas from this company, they have wowed me more than once, and I hope to try more of their teas in the future.
