"Gentle Chinese white tea is complemented by the powerful antioxidants properties of blueberries, naturally sweetened with kiwi and lightly scented with meadow-grown Malva flower petals." ---Boston Tea Company website. For some reason I had it in my head that this was a green tea and not a white one. That is neither here nor there because, now that I think of it, the flavor profile would likely be better paired with a white tea anyway. I really haven't been drinking much white tea lately so this is a welcome change of pace. My sample package contains white tea, some whole dried blueberry pieces and the purple Malva flower petals. The aroma coming from the package is that of blueberries and it smells pretty good. One thing that I must point out here is that the white tea in my sample is rather dark and consists of very small pieces of broken leaves. It also has a number of stems. I don't know if this is indicative of the product offered or if my sample was scraping bottom of the barrel...
Boston Tea Company does not include brewing parameters on their website so I went with my standby white tea preparation, which is water beginning to steam and a 2 min infusion. The white tea brews up a bit on the dark side. I would say that it is a bit on the floral side rather than nutty though it doesn't offer much flavor. The blueberry flavor is well done. It reminds me a little bit of a blueberry pie filling rather than blueberry candies or natural blueberries, which are tart. While the blueberry flavor does dominate, it is not in your face. It plays nicely with the white tea. There is little to say about the white tea in this one. I would not say that it detracts from the blend, but it doesn't offer anything either. I did find that I enjoyed this cup best with a bit of rock cane sugar as it brought out the dessert-like blueberry pie filling flavor that I liked. Regarding the kiwi, I saw flickers of something that I thought was kiwi as I drank the cup. However, I think mostly what it did was add a nice sweetness to the cup.
Overall, I like the blueberry flavor profile offered in this blend. However, I find myself a little disappointed in the white tea base. A quality tea base would have made a huge difference in this cup. That is not to say that the cup was bad or that I wouldn't drink another cup if it was offered it to me. It was actually fairly pleasant, but not memorable. If this had a better tea base, then I would give some serious consideration to purchasing this. Unfortunately, this one will not be joining the Vanilla Almond Oolong in my shopping cart when I place an order with Boston Tea Company. There is a coupon on their website for 20% off any order placed before Nov 30, 2009, for those interested.
