I have found my new favorite tea when I first had the opportunity to try out and review an oolong tea. So now I try to grab a few of them every time I get new samples. I have found that I really like the floral oolongs so when I had the opportunity to try out a new…well I am going to say brand...of rose oolong, I jumped at the chance. Kings Tea Rose Oolong is sold thru a site appears to mainly to the coffee crowd but they do have some interesting offerings of teas. I do wish that they had brewing instructions but one can’t have it all. The site’s search engine more than makes up for the lack. Well worth checking outMy sample appears to consist of very dark green tea leaves that have been crumpled into loose balls and rose buds. The aroma is all rose. It reminds me of sitting on my front porch when my roses are in bloom. What a wonderful sensory memory for the end of November. I brewed up my sample using water that has come to a full boil then allowed to cool for a few minutes. I used a teaspoon to 12 ounces of water. Having grown up drinking black teas that have been prepared by the CTC method, it never fails to amaze just how large a tea leaf can be. Once brewed, these leaves fully open up into huge leaves. A teaspoon half fills up my IngeniTea brewer. Not a tea to stuff into a ball or bag.
The aroma once brewed is still very strongly scented of roses and for a moment I was worried that would be all I be able to taste. I found however that I didn’t need to concern myself. The oolong is mild with a sweetly floral taste that the roses contribute too. While not the best oolong I have tasted, this tea produces a very solid cup of tea that I definitely wouldn’t turn down if someone offered it to me. And at less than $7.00 for 150 grams, this is an economical tea to stock for every day use at the office. Especially when one considers that this tea is robust enough to get two tasty steeps with a third that is drinkable but noticeably weaker.
