Immortal Green is a best-selling tea at American Tea Room, and it's not hard to see why. The blend of peach and passionfruit flavors is a winning combination and turns an otherwise vegetal Japanese sencha into a smoother and sweeter treat. The peach flavor is the prominent aspect of the flavor profile, and while I am not sure it is entirely natural, it is enjoyable nonetheless. To me, the passionfruit comes through in the aftertaste, lingering on the tongue just long enough to give the tea a little zing. The tea does have a bit of a bitter aftertaste to it, but nothing so strong as to be offensive or off-putting. While I enjoyed this as a hot drink, I think the peach and passionfruit come through better when this blend is served as an iced tea. This tea is just sweet enough to satisfy a dessert craving, but it isn't so sweet as to disguise its green tea roots. I usually find that I appreciate flavored green teas more when the green tea base is a subtler green tea variety, not something as strong and assertive as a grassy/seaweedy Sencha. However, as long as this tea is prepared properly, the sencha is not too aggressive, the different fruit and vegetal flavors prove to blend harmoniously, and the resulting cup is smooth and enjoyable. I should note is that it is extremely important to heed the suggested brewing parameters (175-degree water and a 3 minute infusion time) of this tea. The first cup I made used water that was probably just a bit too hot, around 185 degrees, and the result was a bitter and overly vegetal sencha flavor that completely clashed with the softer fruit flavors. This tea is a bit fussy and less forgiving of incorrect brewing, but that tends to be something that applies to many green teas, and is not necessarily a negative aspect of this particular tea. Bottom line: a sweet and fruity tea that blends sencha grassiness with peach and passionfruit flavors in a surprisingly smooth way.
