Boston Tea Company’s Bombay Chai is a straight-forward version of a chai tea. What I mean by this is that this tea is decent enough as chai goes, but it lacks any special quality that really makes it stand out from the multitude of chai teas on the market. Inspecting the tea indicates that this is fairly high quality stuff, as bits and pieces of the traditional chai spices are all noticeable and obvious in the blend. Cardamom is the most noticeable scent coming through from the dry blend, and this carried over into the brewed tea as well. Overall, the spice level is almost perfect, being neither too mild or too powerful. The only exception was the cardamom which I found could be a little to strong, giving the tea a bit of a harsh aftertaste. The Boston Tea Company website suggests using a pinch of sugar and a generous amount of milk; I chose to prepare this the way I prepare all chai: with generous amounts of both milk and sugar. Truthfully, even though I added a nice rounded spoonful of sugar, I found that this particular blend, being rather heavy on the cardamom, needed perhaps even a little bit more to smooth out any harshness and make this an easy-sipping drink. In all, not a bad tea, but as I said before, this tea lacks any “wow” factor. This is a tea that I wouldn’t outright recommend on its own, but if you happen to be purchasing other tea products from Boston Tea Company and find yourself in need of chai tea, go ahead and add this to your online shopping cart.
